Footwear Sample Development & Prototyping

Bulk is only as good as the sample it's built from. SoleForge runs an in-house development room — pattern, last, and sole engineering — that turns a sketch, reference pair, or tech pack into a fit-confirmed, wear-tested master sample. Samples typically arrive in 7–12 days, and each round tightens fit, materials, branding, and cost before you commit to a 30–45 day production run.

In detail

How we run it

From sketch, reference pair, or tech pack to a confirmed master sample — our in-house development team builds, fits, and refines prototypes before bulk.

What you can start from

We develop from whatever you have: a hand sketch or tech pack, a reference pair you want adapted, brand mood-boards, or 3D/CAD files. The richer the input — target last, fit notes, materials, and price — the faster and cheaper development goes. If you only have a concept, our designers can translate it into a buildable spec before the first sample.

The sampling stages

Development moves through clear gates: a first proto to validate look and construction; a fit sample checked on the target last (and on real feet) to dial sizing and comfort; a materials/branding round to confirm leathers, foams, colors, and logos; and a final counter-sample (salesman/confirmation sample) that becomes the master reference for bulk. Each round comes with photos and notes so remote buyers can approve confidently.

Lasts, tooling & originality

For fully original styles we develop or modify lasts and cut sole/outsole tooling — the foundation of fit and silhouette. Tooling is a one-time, amortized cost that then powers unlimited repeat orders. We advise where an existing last/mold gets you 90% of the way (saving time and cost) versus where a bespoke tool is worth it for a signature shape.

Costing & moving to production

Alongside the physical sample we build a costed bill of materials so you can see how each material, finish, and branding choice affects the landed price — and trade off look against margin before committing. Once you approve the master sample, branding, and compliance scope, bulk runs 30–45 days, inspected against that exact sample.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Common questions about sample development. Need something specific? Ask our team in your quote request.

How long does a footwear sample take?+

Typically 7–12 days per round. Original styles needing new lasts or tooling take longer on the first round; subsequent fit and confirmation samples are faster.

What do I need to provide to start development?+

Anything from a sketch or tech pack to a reference pair or 3D file, plus target last/fit, materials, branding, and price. The more detail you share, the fewer sample rounds and the faster you reach bulk.

Do you charge for samples and tooling?+

Samples and any required last/mold tooling carry a development cost, which is quoted upfront. Tooling is a one-time charge amortized across production and reused for all repeat orders.

What happens after I approve the sample?+

Your approved counter-sample becomes the master reference. We confirm branding, packaging, and compliance, then run bulk in 30–45 days, inspecting production against that master so what ships matches what you signed off.
